We Need a Complete Christmas Clean-Up!

We Need a Complete Christmas Cleanup (right this very minute!) - from Isaiah 1.

Intro: Highlighting through Isaiah 1, where Israel stood before God, and why God was going to bring judgement.

So, like Israel we need a thorough Christmas clean-up when . . .

 1.     Before the Lord we are much like Sodom and Gomorrah - Vs. 10

Vs. 9 - But for a small faithful remenant Israel could have had the same fate as Sodom and Gomorrah.

Vs. 10 – The underlying sin of Sodom and Gomorrah. Ezekiel 16:49-50, “As I live, saith the Lord God, Sodom thy sister hath not done, she nor her daughters, as thou hast done, thou and thy daughters. Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good.”

2.     Before the Lord there are many pretenious religious acts, and God is fed up with them all - Vs. 11.

Isaiah 29:13, “Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men: Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.”

3.    Before the Lord there is attendence but God doesn't care, because He knows the heart - Vs. 12

4.     Before the Lord there are many efforts, but God is ultimately grieved - Vss. 13-14

God had ordained many days of worship for the Jewish people. But now he wanted nothing to do with them, because of the heart condition and sinful behavior of the people. Have you ever stopped to consider what God thinks of the biggest Christian holiday of the year, Christmas? Much of the worship he gets at Christmas grieves Him, because the hearts of the worshippers are not right!

5.  Before the Lord there are many prayers, but God will not hear - Vs. 15

Isaiah 59:2, “Behold, the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God,  and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness. None calleth for justice, nor any pleadeth for truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.”

Hebrews 12:14-15, “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled.”

We can have a thorough clean-up when . . .

1.     WE HEED GOD'S CALL TO REPENTANCE

A.   Confess (Wash you, and make you clean) - Vs. 16, 1 John 1:9, Proverbs 28:13

B.   Forsake (…Put away the evil of your doings…) - Vs. 16

C.   Learn (…to do well…) - Vs. 17

Do well:

·      I am to seek justice, that which is right and fair to all.

·      I am to relieve those who are physically and spiritually oppressed.

·      I am to seek the well being of the fatherless and the widow.  Those who are down and out are not to be exploited, but helped.

2.     We can have a thorough clean-up when we accept God's offer for cleansing - Vss. 18-20

 A.   THE WORK OF GOD - Vs. 18. Isaiah 1:18, “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.”

 B.   THE RESPONSE OF MAN (If ye be willing and obedient…) - Vss. 19-20

Vs. 20 – If you are not willing to repent, to let God cleanse you, you will suffer judgment.
